Getting Around

A Coastal Soulscape

The south coast of Sri Lanka is a world of contrasts: golden beaches, hidden coves, fishermen balanced on stilts, and vibrant towns alive with cafés, design shops, and the rhythm of tropical life. Ahangama, your coastal home, captures all of this in one soulful stretch of shoreline where creativity meets calm and surfboards lean beside palm trees.

Exploring from Licuala is part of that experience. Ahangama is just a short tuk-tuk ride away, and there are often drivers waiting near the gate, ready to take you wherever you’d like to go. If none are available, we can arrange one within minutes. Tuk-tuks can wait for you during your visit, or you can easily find one on your way back.

For longer journeys such as airport transfers or day trips, private cars with drivers are available and can be arranged upon request. Ride-hailing apps like PickMe and Uber also operate in the area, but we encourage guests to support local drivers whenever possible. Choosing a village tuk-tuk not only helps the community but also offers a more authentic connection to Sri Lankan life and warmth.

Ahangama

Coastal Charm, Surf Culture & Quiet Allure

Nestled on Sri Lanka’s southern coast, just a short ride from Licuala, Ahangama is a place of graceful contrasts. It combines laid back village vibes with creative energy, boutique culture, surf breaks, and hidden gems of food, nightlife, and shopping. For guests who seek more than sun and sand, Ahangama offers exactly the kind of soulful, stylish immersion that complements a stay in our jungle garden retreat.

Licuala

Where You Are

Ahangama lies along the southern coastline, within easy reach of many of the region’s surf towns. It’s more relaxed and less overtouristed than Mirissa or Unawatuna, but has grown over recent years into a quietly stylish hub. The drive is scenic: paddy fields, coconut groves, palm lined lanes, glimpses of ocean, and the occasional temple or village school. The proximity gives you the comfort of rural calm at Licuala and the option to visit an evolving surf town scene in under five minutes.

We are in Kabalana, the quiet beach side of Ahangama town. Though it has grown, it retains a quaintness: small boutiques, quiet alleys, minimal streetlights after dark, and friendly locals who still treat travelers as guests, not numbers.

Surf & Sea

Waves for Every Level

Surf lovers will feel at home here. Ahangama and its nearby breaks, Kabalana, The Rock, and Marshmallow Reef, offer something for every level.

  • Kabalana Beach: a relaxed stretch ideal for learners and mellow rides.
  • The Rock: a famous reef break attracting experienced surfers.
  • Marshmallow Reef: playful waves with perfect shape when conditions align.

The surf season, from November to April, is best for cleaner, more consistent wave conditions. Other beach breaks are surfable for the rest of the year.

Coffee, Food & Bars

Where Locals and Travelers Meet

Ahangama’s café and bar scene is intimate, creative, and diverse, blending local flavor with international style.

In the evenings, you’ll find live music, beach bars, and sunset cocktails. Dining ranges from traditional rice and curry houses to modern fusion menus in cozy garden settings.

Shopping & Boutiques

Small Labels, Local Hands

Ahangama has become a small creative hub for locally made, ethical products.

  • Daydream & Secrets of the Sun: local swimwear and resort apparel.
  • Olive Yu Jewellery: artisan gemstone pieces inspired by island life.
  • Mutki Studio: ethical linen clothing and homewares.
  • Prickly Pear by CAC.TUS: beach hats, surf apparel, and accessories.
  • Negombo: Lifestyle surf shop
  • Ceylon Sliders: surf lifestyle shop with local art and design.

Boutiques typically open from late morning until sunset, ideal for a mid afternoon browse after the beach.

Nightlife & Evening Vibes

Slow Beats & Soft Lights

Ahangama’s nights are unhurried and soulful. Instead of loud clubs, you’ll find small gatherings by the beach, live sets, and sunset hangouts.

  • Soul & Surf: relaxed beach bar with acoustic music and good company.
  • Hotel de Uncle's: sunset cocktails and chill conversations by the shore.
  • TRAX: DJ nights, pop up art events, and creative meetups.
  • Lighthouse: Cocktails and occasional Djs on the rootop.

The atmosphere is intimate and warm, perfect for those who enjoy social energy without chaos, the kind of evening that ends under quiet skies and the sound of waves.
