Hidden between rice fields and palms just inland from Kabalana Beach, Licuala Lanka sits in the heart of Sri Lanka’s “Surf Belt.” Within a 5–15 minute tuk-tuk ride, you can reach more than a dozen world-class breaks that suit every level — from long, mellow rollers to punchy reef peaks.
The south-coast rhythm starts early: roosters crow before sunrise, offshore winds hold glassy lines across the Indian Ocean, and surfers paddle out beneath streaks of orange sky.
By mid-morning, boards are stacked on tuk-tuks headed for breakfast or the next wave up the coast.
Evenings are for sunset sessions, seafood BBQs, and the chatter of geckos in Licuala’s jungle garden.
Season: November – April brings the cleanest swell and lightest winds; May – October still offers dawn-glass windows and fewer crowds.
All distances and times are approximate from Licuala Lanka’s gate on Kabalana Road (05° 58′ N / 80° 21′ E). Road quality and tides can affect timing — add 5–10 minutes if you’re towing boards by scooter.
Peaky reef options just west of Kabalana — a fun alternative when crowds build up.
Signature A-frame: longer left walls and a shorter, punchier right. Strong leashes recommended; crowded at sunrise.
Rolling white water and soft peaks along a wide sandy bay — ideal for first sessions or small-day fun.
Playful mix of reef and sand by the stilt fishermen. Mind the shallow left end section and use the keyholes for entry / exit.
Deep-reef rollers with gentle take-offs — great for your first green waves.
Multiple peaks in town; on a clean south swell expect rippable walls and easy channels.
Fast walls and a crisp inside when lined up; watch the shallows on low tide.
A touch punchier; loves clean south swell and mid tide.
Wrapping lefts and mixed peaks that reward good timing with tide and wind.
Longish lefts, quick rights, and rocky inside sections to respect.
A sheltered nook that stays cleaner when the rest of the coast maxes out.
Long, carvey lefts on a clean south swell with classic south-coast views.
Fast and shallow with barrel sections on the right day — for experienced reef surfers only.
A short drive west brings you to the famous Midigama cluster — busy but brilliant when firing:
Weligama & Mirissa offer mellow alternatives and longboard dreams when the reefs get too punchy.
